The Fairmont and Raffles Hotels in Makkah will for the first time take in more than 6,000 guests each day during Haj.

This year there has been more demand than ever before for rooms during the pilgrimage and staff are getting ready for an incredibly busy period.

Ahmed Hozaien is the Managing Director for FRHI, who are the parent company for FRHI in Makkah.

He said: “Every year, our Hajj plan starts a few months back to ensure smooth and efficient service for the pilgrims, Makkah is a wonderful city, with a huge history and cultural diversity, and of course the centre of the Islamic world. We feel very proud to be in this unique location serving our Muslim guests from all around the world.”

The Fairmont Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel is the closest hotel to the Masjid Al Haram and Kaaba. The Raffles Makkah Palace is also in a unique location close to the Zamzam Well and Al-Nour mountain in addition to Kaaba and the Masjid Al Haram.

Since they were opened in 2010 more than two and a half million pilgrims have stayed in the hotels.

The Fairmont Makkah Royal Clock Tower is a blend of modern architecture and Islamic heritage of the hotel and creates an ambience that makes each guest feel special and welcome. As the guest relaxes into the hospitality, he cannot be but moved by the breathe taking panoramic views of the Haram and Ka\'bah that augment his spiritual experience and encourage peaceful reflection.

The Raffles Makkah Palace is an extremely discreet yet highly refined residential sanctuary for elite and discerning Muslim travellers. It is an all-suites hotel, featuring breath taking views of the Grand Mosque and the Holy Ka’aba. Personal butlers exemplify the “heartfelt service” which is a hallmark of all Raffles properties, as they strive to anticipate residents’ needs with an attentive yet unobtrusive style that is described as “like a gentle breeze

The Managing Director added: “The Haj is an amazing time for all of us. We prepare meals for almost 5000 guest on a daily basis satisfying the multicultural preferences, providing a fresh and lavish buffet daily, producing huge quantities, and maintaining a high level of hygiene and food safety. To guarantee a smooth and wonderful experience to our guests, we started our preparations and plans more than 3 months ago! The crew is around 200 chefs and 150 stewards – a well-prepared culinary army!”

A landmark sight in Makkah is the clock at The Fairmont Hotel.

The building is topped by a four-faced clock, visible from 25 kilometres (16 miles) away. The clock is the highest in the world at over 400 metres (1,300 ft) above the ground. It replaces the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the tallest clock tower in the world. The clock\'s face is also bigger than the previous record holder as the largest clock face in the world, the Cevahir Mall clock in Istanbul.

Each of the clock\'s four faces measure 46 m (151 ft) in diameter and are illuminated by 2 million LED lights, with four oriented edges, just above the clock alongside huge Arabic script reading: “God is the Greatest” on the north and south faces and on the west and east the Koran. Four golden domes on pillars on all the corners are also present. Another 21,000 white and green coloured lights, the same as the Saudi Flag, fitted at the top of the clock, will flash to signal Islam\'s five-times daily prayers, and will be visible as far as 30 km (19 mi) away. On special occasions such as New Year, 16 bands of vertical lights will shoot some 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) up into the sky. The clock\'s four faces will be covered with 98 million pieces of glass mosaics. The Saudi coat of arms is displayed at the centre of each clock behind the dials. The minute hand is 22 m (72 ft) long, while the hour hand is 17 m (56 ft) long.
