Raising the Green Flag

Home Grown Children’s Eco Nursery joined the global ranks of internationally acclaimed Eco-Schools on the 1st of July 2014, which marked a paramount leap for sustainable education in the Middle East. As the first ever Nursery to be awarded the accolade in the GCC region,Home Grown proudly raised the symbolic ‘Green Flag’at a significant ceremony on the 17th of November.

“We are truly honoured to join the prestigious Eco-Schools programme. The ‘Green Flag’ validates our CSR efforts thus far especially recognising the support and goodwill we have experienced from our parents, as well as the local and regional community”, state the founders of Home Grown Children’s Eco Nursery, Lucy Bruce and Beverly Jatwani.

To be awarded the Green Flag is no easy feat as applicants undergo a truly meticulous seven step environmental evaluation process; not only demonstrating a green-friendly approach to education but driving environmental impact in the community. To date, only 12 fully-fledged schools have been best owed with the ‘Green Flag’ in the region. Home Grown earns its place this year as the only Nursery School to ever receive this accolade, not only in the UAE but in the entire GCC region.

The nursery follows the British EYFS Curriculum, alongside their own Green Engagement Programme which allows children to embrace the simple joys of life in a totally natural setting; from the organic patches across the extensive 15,000 square foot garden to the nursery mascot Pedro- a critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot, every aspect of Home Grown reflects the values of mindful living. Further supporting environmental awareness, the nursery is also home to a recycling centre equaling recycled amounts to schools in the United Kingdom. CSR initiatives like Harmony House are also closely ingrained in the nursery’s philosophy - teaching children compassion and encouraging them to have respect and awareness for the world around them.Supporting an eco-friendly community down to the last detail;even the toys used at the nursery are made from wood from sustainable forests, setting a clear example of sustainability and illustrating that mindful, holistic living can begin at any age.

Home Grown believes that every child is unique and deserves to develop in nurturing, engaging and eco-friendly surroundings. This was best represented at the flag raising ceremony hosted at Home Grown, Al Sanbook, UmmSuqueim on the morning of the 17th of November. It is clear that Home Grown has a bright, green future ahead, but for now, look forward to the Green Flag, billowing proudly in the wind, reminding us all that it’s never too early, and never too late to “nurture by nature”.
