Ocean Mysteries award-winning show to highlight Thailands environmental conservation projects

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Los Angeles and New York Offices are lending their support to the filming of Ocean Mysteries, a television show from US broadcasting corporation ABC, as they come to shoot a documentary about Thailand’s environmental conservation and marine environments during February and March this year.

Hosted by Jeff Corwin, a well-known conservationist and expert on marine life, the Ocean Mysteries show tells viewers about marine animals and the importance of preserving the world’s oceans. The show won two Emmy Awards in 2014 for Most Outstanding Travel Show and for Outstanding Directing.

Ocean Mysteries appears on ABC stations nationwide as part of the Litton Weekend Adventure block of programmes. The programme is #1 nationwide during its time period (following Good Morning America on Saturday mornings) with an average weekly audience of over 1.8 million viewers.

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of TAT said, “We look forward to seeing how the show will reveal some of the pristine marine environments found around Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations – Phuket, Samui and Pattaya. Also, it will be as exciting to see how our elephant conservation projects in Chiang Rai will be shown to the world through the experiences of Jeff Corwin.”

Jeff Corwin has produced programmes all over the world for Animal Planet, Disney Channel and CNN to promote environmental conservation.

During the shoot in Thailand from 26 February – 22 March, 2015, Jeff and his crew will be visiting Phuket, which is famous for its coral formations, and Pattaya, where important sea turtle conservation and release projects are taking place.

Earlier this month, the filming crew visited the Anantara Elephant camp in Chiang Rai to learn how Thailand’s national animal, the elephant is being protected through the preservation of its natural habitat. While in Chiang Rai, Mr. Corwin met with Dr. Josh Plotnick, a lecturer in conservation biology at Mahidol University, and the head of Think Elephants International (TEI), a U.S. non-profit organisation that supports research and education work in Thailand, to discuss about research and the work of the TEI and the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), a Thai non-profit organisation that supports the elephants in the camp and funds other projects internationally.

Jeff and his team will also visit Ko Samui to film in the Ang Thong Marine Park, a protected area of over 40 islands with vital mangrove eco-systems where sea eagles thrive, and areas of rare beach forest, home to 16 species of animals and 50 bird species, many found nowhere else.

Mr. Thawatchai said, “The environmental philosophy of the show is shared by the TAT and tour operators who constantly promote green initiatives to protect our nature. For centuries, the people of Thailand’s islands and coastal areas as well as forests and mountains have lived eco-friendly lifestyles – unique to Thailand and which can now be experienced by visitors.”

The Thailand episodes of The Ocean Mysteries TV series are expected to be aired on ABC around September this year.
