The Maltese Islands at ITB 2015 - MTA

The Malta Tourism Authority recently participated in the 49th edition of the International Travel Bureau held in Berlin. The MTA together with Air Malta, the Ministry of Gozo as well as numerous other Maltese and Gozitan industry partners represented the Maltese Islands within the framework of the world’s leading travel show.

Minister for Tourism, Dr Edward Zammit Lewis, as well as MTA chairman Dr Gavin Gulia and MTA CEO Paul Bugeja met a number of leading German travel journalists for a media briefing, together with Air Malta chairperson Maria Micallef.

Mr Bugeja was also interviewed by the renowned European TV news station Euronews, in which Mr Bugeja highlighted the islands’ vast events portfolio, the prestige of Valletta 2018 as well as the plans for the setting up of a new Malta Conventions Bureau.

At the culinary counter, Gozitan chef George Borg wowed all those present with mouth-watering delicacies from the islands’ varied traditional cuisine.

On the occasion of ITB, the Ambassador of Malta to Germany, Dr Albert Friggieri, hosted a reception under the patronage of the Minister for Tourism at the Maltese Embassy in Berlin. The event was very well attended by the Maltese and Gozitan ITB delegation as well as other guests and business partners.

ITB 2015 attracted 10,096 exhibitors from 186 countries which were represented in 26 fully booked display halls. Overall, some 115,000 trade visitors (2014: 114,000) travelled to Berlin. The share of trade visitors from abroad increased to 43% (2014: 40%).

According to estimates by Messe Berlin the volume of sales at the world’s leading travel trade show increased from around €6.5bn in 2014 to €6.7bn. Hence ITB Berlin 2015 cements its position as the world’s leading travel trade show.

Despite the warm spring weather around 60,000 members of the general public thronged the display halls on the weekend of the show to find out about the wide range of holiday information available from exhibitors.
