Planet 21: Creative Thinking

Sofitel Dubai Downtown is delighted to contribute towards the sustainable efforts of the Accor hotel group with their Planet 21 initiative. Planet 21 endeavors to inform people about the global issue of mass waste disposal that we as a race release into the world each day. The program aims at educating and alerting the community of Dubai to the company’s contribution towards saving the planet.

Sofitel Dubai Downtown has invited Drawdeck, the online art sharing platform, to partner with them for this worthy cause. Al Noor, a Training Centre for Children with Special Needs will also be in support bringing the two charitable causes together.

So, how are they helping? Planet 21 represents the 21 efforts that Accor are contributing towards helping sustainability. The aim is to create environmental awareness by hosting a fabulous Green Art Cocktail Party for people to learn about this topical issue.

As part of the event, five works from Drawdeck, five pieces from the employees of Sofitel Dubai Downtown and five masterpieces from Al Noor Training centre for children with special needs will be created out of materials such as plastic bottles, paper bags and tin cans. Let your imagination run wild when thinking of the endless possibilities these recyclables can produce. These creations will be resurrected from the objects no longer desired by the hotel and heading for landfill. With the concept of recycling still in it’s very early stages in Dubai, Accor is paving the way for people to become more accustomed to putting old things to good use.

With panoramic views stretching over Downtown Dubai and The Arabian Gulf coastline, guests will be greeted with drinks and the chance to preview these unique recycled creations at the Sofitel Dubai Downtown Penthouse. These iconic masterpieces will be on display allowing guests to immerse themselves in sustainability. Throughout the evening, guests can learn how the art has been created and follow its journey from bin liner to beauty. It will be an evening of art, education and appreciation.

Planet 21, the brainchild of Accor aims to actively involve the local community of the UAE to create a unique concept to inform, engage and entertain people through the nation’s shared love of art.

This worthy and informative program goes some way in informing the local community about these issues, and helps involve everybody to save the planet through recycling. We hope guests will use this evening as a chance to reflect on the global issue of waste disposal and see what is possible when we stop and think creatively.
