Sushi and Beyond – new anime series about a family eating their way around Japan

In 2009, Michael Booth and his family set off for an extended stay in Japan to discover whether a Westerner could truly begin to understand the culture, myths and desires behind Japanese food. Booth’s book about their fascinating and funny journey through food-obsessed Japan, Sushi & beyond, has now been turned into a 24-part animated series airing in the UK on NHK World* from Sunday, 12 April.

Accompanied by two fussy eaters under the age of six, he and his wife travelled the length of the country, from bear-infested, beer-loving Hokkaido to snake-infested, seaweed-loving Okinawa. Along the way they dined with sumos; met the indigenous Ainu; drank coffee at the dog café; pampered the world’s most expensive cows with massage beer; discovered the secret of the Okinawa people’s remarkable longevity; shared a seaside lunch with free-diving, female abalone hunters; and met the greatest chefs working in Japan. Less happily, they trashed a Zen garden, witnessed a mass fugu slaughter, were traumatised by an encounter with giant crabs, and attempted a calamitous cooking demonstration for the lunching ladies of Kyoto.

Sushi & Beyond will be broadcast weekly on NHK World. Broadcast times are Sundays at 12:10-12:30, 16:10-16:30 and 20:10-20:30 and Mondays at 2:30-2:50. Visit NHK’s website for more information, NHK Worldwebsite.

*NHK World can be watched in the UK on BskyB channel 507; Freesat channel 209; or Virgin Media channel 625. To find out how to watch NHK channel in other countries, click here http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/tv/howto/
