Magic Carpets, Dolphins and Stallions at Millennium Executive Apartments Muscat

Oman: Living in an automated age, where call centres seem to be staffed by recordings and robots, and where even hospitality professionals prefer to direct guests to online booking engines rather than discuss reservations personally, humour, a sense of hospitality and the personal touch is often hard to find.

Millennium Executive Apartments bucked the trend recently when the reservations department received a very special request from a guest:

“Concierge to greet us in gentle Morgan Freeman voice, announcing the start of an epic, mind-blowing adventure, a white stallion neighing at the entrance, champagne fountain with sparkles, chocolate fountain big enough to swim in, with dolphins jumping around. A magical carpet to make it the most memorable holiday in our lifetime.  Thank you for your best efforts”

Sometimes all it takes to make dreams come true is a sense of fun and a plain old-fashioned hospitality mindset.  Manager of the newly opened hotel, Tim Van Veen rose to the challenge, pulled out all the stops and delivered the requested welcome, complete with personally crafted welcome letter and gift.

This is the reply prepared by Van Veen for the guest’s arrival:

“Dear Guest

Boy, have you kept me busy with your request! Upon hearing from you I have jumped on the plane and travelled to Oman (I am actually staying in the room next to you). Finding you a white stallion was a challenge, it gets a bit dusty in Muscat, so they are all brown, but it does neigh!

Next up was getting on a boat and finding a dolphin happy to spend a few days on land. I did find one, but he has rather big teeth, don’t pay attention to that, he is a very nice dolphin. Will you promise me to fill the bathtub and let him have a bit of a swim, he’s been out of the water for two days already.

The easy bit of course was finding a magical carpet, we are in Oman after all.  I have ensured the carpet was fully tested prior to your arrival, and it complies fully with the Oman flying carpet regulations.  To start the carpet you will have to say the magic spell, which I will reveal next time you stay with us…..”

The letter is signed with a smiley face, by Morgan Freeman.

“Best regards

Morgan Freeman”

Van Veen himself popped next door to the Muscat Grand Mall to source the necessary props to accompany the welcome letter, which were duly placed in the arriving guest’s room.

                                      the horse really did neigh!

Commented Van Veen: “The hotel manager role has evolved in recent years into that of a business manager, office based and revenue driven.  It gives me a great sense of accomplishment to fulfil guest requests, and have a little fun at the same time.” He continued: “the guest was delighted with the efforts we had made, and I am sure we have created a lifelong loyal customer with this small act, as well as a new friend”.
