Tomjachu Bush Retreat – Finding serenity in the bushveld

With the year drawing to an end, comes the time to detach ourselves from life as we know it and to escape into a place of complete serenity to reflect on the year gone by, and look forward to new adventures. Tomjachu Bush Retreat is a private nature reserve, nestled unobtrusively in 1300 acres of lush bushveld, complimented by the majesty of the Bekker Mountains and the surrounding Crocodile Mountain Conservancy. If a sense of peace is what you are after, Tomjachu is the perfect space to calm your inner soul.

Situated a mere 4 hours away from Johannesburg, Tomjachu Bush Retreat is a quick getaway from the pressures of the bustling city. The retreat with its stunning accommodation and unparalleled views, coupled with all its beautiful flora and fauna, plains game and thriving birdlife, evokes a feeling of contentment and vitality. With plenty of ground to cover, there is a variety of things to do to keep your body and mind invigorated as you enter into your period of contemplation.

An early morning self-guided 4–12km bush walk immersed in the reserve’s flourishing natural environment, allows you to open up the lungs, stretch your legs and savour the fresh mountain air filled with the scents of the bushveld. With a summer breeze gently blowing through the trees, and freely roaming animals in close proximity, you can take comfort in Mother Nature’s warm embrace.

With acres of bushveld and the tranquillity of South Dam’s waters, the retreat transforms into an enchanting meditative space. Lay your yoga mat on the banks of the dam and reconnect with nature to awaken your inner peace. With senses heightened, you will hear the soothing sounds of water birds and bountiful wildlife adding a special touch to that deep feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation.

During your stay, spare some time to get up close and personal with some of the unique and impeccable creations gracing the bushveld skies with their vibrant colours and birdsong which echoes throughout the valley.  A bird watching expedition at Tomjachu is sure to be awe-inspiring, with the reserve boasting a variety of over 265 bird species, including seasonal migrants which return each year to the wide variety of habitats on the reserve. Witness a Fish Eagle plucking bass from South Dam, patiently watch the Masked Weavers methodically building their nest, or be enthralled by the dazzling colours of the Narina Trogons and Purple Crested Louries; the sightings are endless.

Time out on Tomjachu Bush Retreat’s alluring nature reserve allows you the space to focus on the revitalisation of body, mind and soul for the year ahead, making it the ultimate Zen zone.
